Rent is significantly cheaper than Gangnam or Itaewon, and the area is a transit hub (Line 2, Line 6, AREX airport line all connect at Hongdae station). Nearby Yeonnam-dong and Mangwon are quieter residential extensions with excellent cafe culture.
The main drawback is noise. Hongdae is loud, especially on weekends when the streets fill with performers, clubgoers, and tourists. If you want the vibe without the noise, look at apartments a few blocks away from the main drag or in neighboring Yeonnam-dong.
