What it is like to live here

Hongdae (short for Hongik University area) is Seoul's creative heartbeat. The neighborhood is named after Hongik University, one of Korea's top art schools, and the creative energy is everywhere: street performers, indie music venues, art installations, and unique cafes.

For expats, Hongdae offers a great balance of affordability and energy. Rent is significantly cheaper than Gangnam or Itaewon, and the area is a transit hub (Line 2, Line 6, AREX airport line all connect at Hongdae station). Nearby Yeonnam-dong and Mangwon are quieter residential extensions with excellent cafe culture.

The main drawback is noise. Hongdae is loud, especially on weekends when the streets fill with performers, clubgoers, and tourists. If you want the vibe without the noise, look at apartments a few blocks away from the main drag or in neighboring Yeonnam-dong.

From trendy cafes to late-night eats, Hongdae has an incredible food scene. Discover the best restaurants in Hongdae on Woongie, with honest reviews from real visitors.
