Can I open a bank account without an ARC?

Yes, but with very limited functionality. Here is what you need to know about opening a Korean bank account with just your passport. Hana Bank and Woori Bank are the most foreigner-friendly options for passport-only accounts. The process takes about 45 minutes at a branch. We recommend going to a branch in an expat-heavy area (Itaewon, Gangnam, or near universities) where staff are experienced with foreign customers. What you CAN do with a passport-only account: - Receive deposits (salary, transfers) - Get a debit card - Make in-person withdrawals What you CANNOT do without an ARC: - Internet banking - Mobile banking app - Transfers above a certain limit (varies by bank) - Open a savings account The account is essentially a holding account. Once you receive your ARC (typically 2-3 weeks after applying at immigration), return to the same branch and they will upgrade your account to full functionality. Important: KB Kookmin and Shinhan generally require an ARC for any account opening, so do not waste your time going there without one. Also, if you are on a tourist visa, some branches may refuse entirely since you do not have a long-term stay plan. Having proof of employment or a school enrollment letter helps your chances. Bring a Korean phone number if you have one (even prepaid). It is not required for the limited account but helps the bank contact you.
