Is Korea safe for solo female travelers?

Korea is genuinely one of the safest countries in the world for solo female travelers. It consistently ranks in the top 5 safest countries for women traveling alone. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. Public transport is excellent and safe at all hours. The subway runs until midnight (later on weekends), and late-night buses run through the night. Taxis are safe. We recommend using KakaoTaxi (the app) because rides are tracked and driver information is recorded. Convenience stores are everywhere and open 24/7, so you always have a well-lit place to duck into. What to be cautious about (not to scare you, just to be practical): - Spy cameras (molka) in public restrooms have been a documented issue. Many public restrooms now have detection devices installed, and the government has been cracking down hard. Stick to restrooms in major subway stations, department stores, and your hotel. - Drink spiking can happen in nightlife areas, same as anywhere. Watch your drinks at bars and clubs. - Itaewon on Friday and Saturday nights gets rowdy due to the bar scene. Not dangerous, but drunk people can be pushy. - Some jimjilbangs (spa/sauna) have co-ed resting areas that can attract unwanted attention. Major chains like Dragon Hill Spa and Siloam are well-managed. The subtle things to expect: older men might stare or make comments (especially if you are visibly foreign). Ajusshis at pojangmacha (street food tents) can get chatty after drinks. It is almost never threatening, just annoying. Practical tips: - Download KakaoMap and Naver Map. Google Maps is unreliable in Korea. - Save the police number (112) and ambulance (119) in your phone. - T-money card works on all public transport. Load it up and you never need cash for getting around. - Guesthouses in Hongdae and Insadong are very solo-traveler friendly. For solo dining: Korea has growing honbap (eating alone) culture. Most restaurants serve solo customers without any issue. Kimbap shops, noodle places, and fast food are the easiest. Some BBQ restaurants require a minimum of two people, but that is about food preparation, not a social judgment. Overall, Korea is one of the best places in Asia for a solo female trip. You can leave your laptop at a cafe table and it will be there when you get back. Lost wallets get returned. People do not bother strangers on the street.
