Here is a realistic monthly budget comparison for a single person living comfortably (not luxury, not bare minimum) in each city. SEOUL: - Rent (1BR, wolse): 1.2M - 2.0M KRW - Utilities + internet: 150K - 250K KRW - Food (cooking + eating out): 400K - 600K KRW - Transport (subway + occasional taxi): 80K - 120K KRW - Phone: 40K - 55K KRW - Entertainment/social: 200K - 400K KRW - Total: 2.1M - 3.4M KRW ($1,550 - $2,500 USD) BUSAN: - Rent (1BR, wolse): 500K - 1.2M KRW - Utilities + internet: 100K - 180K KRW - Food: 300K - 500K KRW - Transport: 50K - 80K KRW - Phone: 40K - 55K KRW - Entertainment: 150K - 300K KRW - Total: 1.1M - 2.3M KRW ($815 - $1,700 USD) Busan is roughly 30-40% cheaper than Seoul overall, with the biggest savings on housing. The food quality in Busan is arguably better (especially seafood) and significantly cheaper. The trade-off: Busan has far fewer corporate jobs (most E-7 roles are in Seoul), a smaller expat community, and fewer English-friendly services. Busan also requires a car more than Seoul does. Seoul's subway covers everything, but Busan's metro is more limited. Budget an extra 300K-500K KRW/month if you need a car in Busan (insurance, gas, parking). Heating costs in winter are comparable between the two cities. Budget 100K+ KRW/month for gas during November through March regardless of which city you are in. For digital nomads on the F-1-D visa, Busan is the better value. You get beach access, great food, fast internet, and 30-40% lower costs. The income requirement ($62-66K) goes much further there.
